Rescued: Jenny Thompson was asleep when a candle set a blind on fire

The prostitute at the centre of the Wayne Rooney sex scandal had to be rescued from her home after a fire broke out at the property, two days after she was rushed to hospital after a suspected overdose.

Fire fighters broke down the door of Jenny Thompson's house and carried her to safety after a candle apparently set fire to a window blind while the 22-year-old was asleep.

Paramedics checked Miss Thompson at the terraced house in the Queensgate area of Bolton, Greater Manchester, but she was unhurt.

The fire happened at about 9pm on Sunday, two days after a 999 call to the same address, following reports Miss Thompson had taken a valium overdose.

She was released from hospital the next day.

Fire crews were called out after the fire alarm at Miss Thompson's home went off.

A friend of Miss Thompson's said: 'Jennifer would like to thank the local fire service for their swift response. They made the situation a lot better by their presence. She hopes this example points out the importance of smoke alarms in all homes.'

The blaze broke out when a tealight left on a windowsill set blinds on fire. It damaged a double glazed window and the rest of the house suffered slight smoke damage.

Watch manager Andy Taylor said: 'The fire was an accident but people should use common sense when using candles, keep them away from curtains and fabrics and ensure they are in a proper holder.'

Fire engines from Bolton Central and Bolton North attended and four firefighters led Miss Thompson to safety. Crews were on the scene for around 20 minutes.

This came a week after Miss Thompson was arrested at her home after being caught with drugs and drugs paraphernalia. She was given a caution for possession of cannabis.

Last year, Miss Thompson hit the headlines when she was featured in national newspaper reports that claimed she was a high-class escort who had had an affair with Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney.
