Parks Canada fees decision demanded by senator
P.E.I. Senator Catherine Callbeck wants the federal government to clarify if it's considering charging a fee to businesses located near national parks and historic sites.
Environment Minister Peter Kent suggested last month that fees could be possible. The fees would be for the privilege of operating a business near a tourist destination. Money from those fees would help with operating costs of national parks and historic sites.
Senator Callbeck asked about the fees during question period in the senate.
"I'm opposed to it, yes," said Callbeck.
"There are a lot of small businesses that are really struggling to make ends meet and the potential of another fee could certainly affect many of them."
The government Senate leader, Marjorie LeBreton, said she would get an answer from the department of Environment.
