AS Lagosians continue to count their losses following recent multiple attacks on the metropolis by men suspected to be armed robbers, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Osu, has called on the Police and other security agencies to wake up from their slumber and face the security challenges ravishing the state.

Reacting to the recent siege by men of the underworld at different lo-cations in Lag-os in which se-veral lives were lost and several mill-ions of naira carted away, Osu, while ex-pressing regret at the unfor-tunate incident, said that the only way to checkmate such incidents from reoccurring is for law enforcement agents to be alert at all times.

“I support the call by the Inspector General of Police that the Lagos State Police must wake up from its slumber. From the reports we read in the newspapers on how the robbery attacks were randomly execut-ed in parts of the state unhind-ered, show that something is wrong somewhere. Where were the law enforcement agents when the robberies were going on? Were they all on recess?

“It is obvious that the robbers did their home work well before striking. They knew the weak-nesses of the Police that was why they were able to succeed. The onus now lies with the authority to restore the people’s confidence in the force by identifying the culprits and bringing them to book,” he stated.

While applauding some efforts by the IGP to reform and reposition the force for better, the clergy man said that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and his men must, as a matter of urgency, brace up to the task of detecting and matching the wave of organiz-ed crime and the unloading of terror on innocent citizens by dare devil robbers.

He equally called on the various arms of government to consolidate effort at providing jobs for the teeming number of unemployed Nigerian youths, warning that unless the alarm-ing spate of unemployment in the country is urgently address-ed, armed robbery, insecurity and other forms of vices in the society would continue unabat-ed.
