Bayelsa UBEB reminds parents of imprisonment clause in UBEC Act

The Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) says parents and guardians who fail to send their children and wards to school are risking imprisonment in the state.

Mr Walton Liverpool, the Executive Secretary of the board, said that they were also liable to a fine of N2, 000 for first offenders and N5, 000 for those who had earlier been apprehended.

Liverpool, who gave the warning on Thursday in Yenagoa at reception organised in his honour by some of his associates, said the sanctions were enshrined in the Universal Basic Education Commission Act, 2004.

He advised parents to take advantage of the free education policy of the State Government to send their children and wards of school age to school.

The executive secretary said that community-based education committee would be set-up in all schools across the state to monitor the activities of teachers.

“The situation where teachers leave their duty post for several months will be a thing of the past,’’ he said, adding that the supervision unit of the board would be revived to ensure adequate supervision of schools. (NAN)
