FG plans bumper harvest

In a bid to ensure food security in Nigeria, Federal Government is to ensure that seed sellers sell quality and seeds to farmers for good harvest.
Assistant Director,Controller of Seed,Nationwide] National Agricultural Seed Council, arm of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Agboola Adebayo, who led a team to Kwara State said the exercise became necessary because proliferation of bad seeds among seed dealers to farmers has adversely affected food security in the country.
He lamented that the level of compliance among the seed dealers was just above 40 per cent in most places visited in Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun, saying that some of the confiscated seeds would be burnt in Abuja at a later date.
He noted that punitive measures had been outlined for culprits, stressing that sanctions, ranging from jail terms and payments of heavy fines, were underway when the National Assembly finally passes the bill which he said is at its final stage.
