Boko Haram: Peter Obi gives14 widows N1 million each
No fewer than 14 widows whose husbands were murdered by suspected Boko Haram members in Mubi, Adamawa State yesterday, received N1 million each as compensation from Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
Obi, who presented the cheques after Holy Mass at St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Adazi-Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state, warned those who might want to make political gains out of the unfortunate situation. Speaking at the presentation, Obi who was accompanied by his wife, Margaret, and member representing the area at the Federal House, Uche Ekwunife, said the Adamawa State Government also promised to pay compensation.
The governor called on the people to remember the deceased in prayers and assist their families in any way possible to live on. He thanked the people of Adazi-Nnukwu for remaining calm and counselled against revenge of any sort, pointing that vengeance is God’s.
Earlier, the President General of Adazi-Nnukwu, Mr. Ben Enemuo commended the governor for showing compassion to the people, saying that his present efforts and love for those that were killed at Adamawa were humbling and touching.
He said what was uplifting was that he rendered all the assistance without shouting it from the rooftops unlike others whose only concern was only to gain political advantages over the situation. Rev. Fr. Jonas-Benson Okoye, said Obi was a special gift from God. In his words: “He has today given the families of the deceased money and had already requested us to bring the names of the children of the dead for their scholarship to start running immediately.”
Senator Chris Ngige, who was present at the event, thanked the governor for his show of compassion, saying that, politics or no politics people with good intention should be commended. Dean, Faculty of Law of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ken Nworgu, said Obi had continued to bring glory to Anambra State, and thanked him for all the things he had done in Anambra State.
Reacting on behalf of the widows, Mrs Eugenia Okpala, said she was short of words for the governor’s gestures. She said she had heard so much about how good and compassionate the governor was to those who needed it and how hostile he was to those who wanted to steal from the state and that she witnessed it herself today.
