Nigeria Daily News: Desert encrochment: NGO distributes 2,000 tree seedlings to Adamawa LGAs Desert encrochment: NGO distributes 2,000 tree seedlings to Adamawa LGAs ================================================================================ Staff on 25/10/2012 11:34:00 Yola – In an effort to check desert encroachment, `Garden Trust  Foundation’, an NGO, says it has given 2,000 tree seedlings to Michika and Madagali local government areas of Adamawa for planting. Mr. Ussa Yohanna, the Coordinator of the organisation, told journalists on Thursday in Yola that the two beneficiary local governments were the most prone to desert encroachment. Yohanna said that the organisation planned to distribute about 10,000 tree seedlings across the state free of charge. “This year alone, we planned to distribute almost 10,000 tree seedlings  to schools, farmers, government offices and private organisations. “But due to our inability to pay for the transportation of the seedlings to designated areas, we ended up distributing only 4,000 seedlings this year.” He said that due to the recent flood disater that ravaged the state, there was the need for the government to evolve  a special environment  protection programme, to protect future generation from climate calamity. Yohanna called on organisations and well-meaning individuals in the state to collaborate with the government in combating desert encroachment through tree planting and sensitisation against tree felling.
