NIS rakes in N45bn from issuance of e-passport
…arrests 6 suspects for forgery
BY VICTORIA OJEME
ABUJA-The Nigerian Immigration Service has so far generated N45, 365, 545, 500 from the issuance of e-passport due to formally take effect as Nigeria’s official travel document in December 2011.
Findings weekend indicated that 2,511,135 e-passports were issued from inception in 2007 to December 2010, while 2, 825, 988 e-passports had been issued between January and April 2011.
Investigations further revealed a significant drop in the number of forgeries of the e-passport, with only six cases of forgery so far detected.
It was also discovered that six suspects are currently being tried for forging the new travel document in the last of three years and this is in sharp contrast to several hundreds of the international travel passports soon to be phased out.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Joachim Olumba, who confirmed this development, told Vanguard that female suspects were arrested and arraigned at the Federal High Court 12, Ikoyi, Lagos, , adding that while two of the female suspects were remanded at Kirikiri prisons four males suspects were at Ikoyi prisons.
A breakdown of the e-passports issued from 2007 to date indicated that between 2007 and December 2010, 2,511,135 Nigerians applied for and got the e-passports, with N21, 344, 647,500 going into government treasury.
