Tunisia: Legal Framework of National Authority of Prevention Against Torture Completed
Tunis — The legal framework of the National Authority of Prevention Against Torture has been completed announced, Friday, Abdelhamid Ben Abdallah, chargé de mission in the Human Rights and Transitional Justice Ministry during a meeting with the press. This project will be the focus of a national consultation to be validated and implemented afterwards, he went on saying.
He pointed out that the creation of this authority follows the decision issued from the Conference organised on May 19, 2012, in the Ministry providing for the creation of a committee in charge of developing a draft law providing for the creation of a national prevention mechanism.
He also said that this decisions is following Tunisia's pledge notably after the ratification of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the Optional Protocol to the United Nations (UN) Convention Against Torture of 2011, by virtue of which Tunisia is under the obligation to establish a law providing for the creation of a national mechanism of prevention against torture.
